PK’s All-you-can-eat Sushi night
Review and photo

As a picky State-sider, I wasn’t expecting to be blown away when asked to review Sushi so far from the coast. After all, I have eaten kosher Sushi all over the world. But, blown away I was!
We were met by a warm greeting at the door and asked where we would like to sit.
The explained that, as it was Wednesday, they offer an a la carte menu or their Sushi special. We said we had come for the Sushi and asked for two glasses of water which arrived surprisingly promptly.
The Sushi Platter
The platter was very well put together and had the brightest Ginger I have ever seen. There was a neon green Wasabi (which turned out to be nice and strong). We were most impressed with the presentation.
On each of our platters was an order of each on the following: Hand Roll, Salmon Sashimi, Vegetable Salmon Roll, Nagiri, Cucumber Roll and Salmon Roll. Of course it came with the accompanying bowl of Soy Sauce.
Two things surprised me right away. First of all, as Sushi lovers know, the rice is very important. It was well flavoured with a wonderful texture and the proper balance of moist and sticky.
Outstanding fish
That being said, the great quality of the rice was far overshadowed by the quality and freshness of the fish. It was by far the freshest and best fish I have had in the country – with a silky texture.
Having asked the question myself, I can inform the audience that it is specially flown in, never frozen, Scottish Salmon. (Just stumbling across fish of this quality in Joburg was a worthwhile experience.)
Attentive and thoughtful
The service was attentive and thoughtful. Before we were halfway done with the initial platter, we were asked what we enjoyed the most so that the chef could begin preparing it.
When we finished our original platters, they cleared the entire table, including half-bowls of soy sauce, cutlery, everything. Then they brought new bowls and utensils with our fresh helping which came just as soon as were done with the first.
Second helpings
We were so spoiled for choice and struggled to decide which of the six were worth re-ordering. Their Sushi offering had all the usual classics, and each prepared as well as the next.
The Hand Roll had a good balance of fish, vegetable and rice and perfectly ripe avocado. It was well constructed.
The Sashimi was so delicious that I ended up having a third helping.
But, while each of the offerings was outstanding, if I had to pick a favourite it was the Nagiri – it was the pure embodiment of everything that was great.
The only drawback to the evening was the limited availability of items on their already ordinary desert menu, which resulted in our choosing to opt out.
We will certainly go back to PK’s on a future Wednesday night.
