The SA government has recently changed legislation doing away with all part time paramedic courses. In future the only way to become a paramedic will be by doing a minimum two to four years full time study at university.

Hatzolah runs its community service off its own volunteer base. “These are guys with other jobs who qualified part time as paramedics,” explains Hatzolah’s Davi Hofman.

“The scrapping of part time courses jeopardises the future of Hatzolah in the long run. We need to get in as many new recruits as possible before 1 December 2010.

Hatzolah has obtained permission and accreditation to run their own part-time course - starting at the beginning of June 2010.

“But,” says Hofman, “so far the response to the course has been poor.” Hatzolah is “trying to get [the message] to as many people as possible.”

The courses run for about ten weeks with two to three evenings of lectures in the week and sometimes on Sundays. “This is the last course of its kind to be run,” says Hatzolah’s Davi Hofman.

“It is a great course and of a high standard and is incredibly interesting,” he says.

And, of course, Hatzolah is an amazing organisation.

I think Hatzolah is a brilliant organisation. They helped save my husband's life last week. How come women can't volunteer? I don't get that.
