Joburg’s culture-vultures are once again being consumed by the annual Kollel clearance sale.
Owner David Aronowitz, who reported first-day sales last Sunday down eight percent on last year’s record, today told MyShtetl that sales were “picking up nicely” during the week.
“We will have more than 200 popular titles on the 75-percent-off tables throughout Friday and Sunday,” says David, “and that should keep customers coming back.”
Incidentally, the sale ends next Friday, so if you are a weekend shopper, this is your last chance.
30% off everything you see in the shop
While he offers thirty percent off all marked prices on all stock in the shop, David moves titles on and off his 75-percent-off tables every day. He says this gets people coming back numerous times.
The sales staff told MyShtetl today that customers are walking out “with three or four bags full of books,” and still coming back for more.
David’s personal picks for this weekend are:
The award-winning “Growing With My Children” by Sarah Shapiro – which was R300 and is now at R120; and
“The Oral Law of Sinai” by Rabbi Berel Wein – which has been reduced from R450 to just R250. (SEE REVIEW BELOW)
“The Oral Law of Sinai: An Illustrated History of the Mishnah” by Rabbi Berel Wein is published by Jossey-Bass in a 208-page hardcover edition.
Written by the respected historian Rabbi Berel Wein, “The Oral Law of Sinai” is an extraordinary and beautifully illustrated book that explores the Talmud — a law book that is a faithful transmission of the Oral Law of Sinai.
As Rabbi Wein explains, the Talmud is two separate books comprising the Oral Law. This work offers an explanation of the first book of the Talmud, the Mishnah.
Author’s Note
“In the Mishnah text itself the title ‘Rabi’ is usually used before the full name of the scholars of the Mishnah, though sometimes the title ‘Rabbi’ is also properly used. The title and name ‘Rabi’ is always used for Rabi Yehuda HaNasi, and he is called just plain ‘Rabi’ throughout the Mishnah.
“I have attempted to adhere to the titles used in the Mishnah regarding each of the scholars, though in reality the titles Rabbi and Rabi are really interchangeable. I pray that you will not find this confusing and realize that these are not typographical errors but rather an attempt to be as faithful as possible to the language and ideas of the Mishnah itself.”

Rabbi Wein is a recipient of the Torah Prize Award from Machon Harav Frank in Jerusalem for his achievements in teaching Torah and spreading Judaism throughout the world. He lives in Jerusalem.

It was fabulous, I only got
It was fabulous, I only got 2 bags full, but they were heavy and really full. I got some really great books at ridiculously low prices. There are some fantastic books there but at some point my credit card would have burped so I had to contain myself just a little. I was surprised how much stock I found so many days into the sale. Everything is one sale and they have a huge amount of stock. I think I might have to pop in on Sunday again. Maybe I'll buy two more bags full ;)
In my excitement I misplaced my phone and only realised when I left. A kindly soul in the store lent me her phone and I must have looked like a crazed lunatic dialling a number, hearing the ring, taking her the phone away from my ear and squinting in the distance as if somehow my eyes might have helped me hear my ring tone (Ovinu by Yaakov Sheweky) in the distance. Eventually I found it under the front passenger seat of my car... thanks for the help ladies :)
