BOOKS OF THE WEEK

SAKS, DAVID - BOEREJODE - Boerejode (Jewish boer) refers to the Jews from the outlying areas where the Afrikaans culture and language predominated. Often the immigrants from Eastern Europe learned Afrikaans before they spoke English. Although many fought on the side of the Boers there were more Jews who fought on the British side.

OREM, RAM - GERTRUDA'S OATH - Michael Stolowitzky, the only son of a wealthy Jewish family in Poland is left in the care of his mother, and Gertruda, his Catholic nanny.
When Michael's mother suffers a stroke, Gertruda promises the dying woman that she will make her way to Palestine, and raise Michael as her own. The book recreates their amazing journey, along with the people they met along the way, who helped ensure their survival.

KELLERMAN, FAYE - BLINDMAN'S BLUFF - Lieutenant Peter Decker of the LAPD has the task of finding the killers of a wealthy California family. There is no shortage of suspects - from the members of his own bodyguard - especially as most of these are drawn from LA's street gangs - to business associates, and even their own kin. Peter's wife Rina, is serving on a jury at the time, and a chance meeting means that she inadvertently gets drawn in to her husband's investigation. A fairly typical Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus thriller, this book is well-paced and a "good read".

DVDs OF THE WEEK

THE DEBT (HEBREW-ENGLISH SUB-TITLES
In 1964, Rachel Brenner is one of three Mossad agents whose mission is to capture the 'Surgeon of Birkenau', a monstrous Nazi war criminal. He is working under a false identity, as a gynaecologist in a small clinic in the centre of Berlin. As part of the operation, Rachel becomes one of his patients, building a trust between the two and enabling agents to discreetly kidnap the doctor and move him to Mossad's safe house in the suburbs. As the three agents wait for their return to Israel in order to deliver the war criminal for public trial, a psychological duel commences between the Nazi doctor and the young agents.

THE LAST BUTTERFLY
It is wartime - 1944. In the tiny village of Terezin, to show a caring face of Nazism, Hitler has given the village to the Jews as a place where they can live in freedom. At the heart of the scheme is the great French mime Antoine Moreau. The Nazis order him to put on the greatest show of his life, and he becomes driven with the need to tell the world the truth.
