A unique opportunity to ask all your kosher consumer
questions and get the answers from those in the know!
The Kosher Consumer’s Organisation (KCO), a division of the Federation of Synagogues Womens’ Guilds of SA, have extended an invitation to all members of the kosher community to come and talk tachlis about kosher consumer issues.
The Union of Orthodox Synagogues (UOS) of which the KCO is a division [actually, not - see comment below -ED], will host a discussion called “Kashrut, the UOS and Consumers.” See invitation below.
The speaker will be the UOS’ executive director (and popular radio presenter) Darren Sevitz.
This is “a unique opportunity to have all your kosher consumer questions answered” says the invitation from the KCO.
Sevitz told MyShtetl that he intends covering kashrut in general, “and the role played by the UOS.”
He says, for example, that the UOS is often asked about “the process whereby a product becomes certified – from application to shelf.”
He intends to cover other commonly-asked questions as well, like:
• How does the UOS determine the fees?
• Do the fees have any effect on the consumer?
• Why are products sometimes removed from the list and old stock can be used, and then at times old stock cannot be used?
• What are the reasons why products are removed – is it all about money?
Other questions often asked of the UOS that will be covered, include:
• How does the Beth Din regulate and certify establishments (restaurants, bakeries etc)?
• How are their fees determined?
• What is the effect of these fees on the consumer?
• What other (non-UOS) issues do they face which affect the consumer?
• Why do we pay R7,50 per head for a catered function?
• What does the UOS charge for beef and chicken slaughter?
• Where does the money go and how does it affect the consumer?
• Why are Pesach prices so much more than year round?
In an especially brave move, Sevitz will take questions from attendees. If anyone in SA can answer your consumer-related questions about kashrut, it is Darren Sevitz.
The talk is at 10am on Wednesday 11 August at the Banquet Hall of the HOD Centre in Oaklands Road, Orchards. Tea will be served.
Those wishing to attend must book. Contact Hannah at 010 214-2600 (remember it is 010) during the mornings.

Thanks for the plug Ant. I'd
Thanks for the plug Ant. I'd like to meet this Sevitz charachter, he seems amazing.
Small point - the KCO is not a division of the UOS. It is an independant group, which works on consumer rights and issues with specific focus on the kosher aspect. Although we are closely affilaiated, by definition, their independance must be guaranteed.
